The business, established in 1910 by Lionel Chater and trading as “Lion Chater Cycles”
Has always catered for the needs of the Model Train enthusiast of all ages. In the mid 40’s when the business passed from father to son. Alf relocated to the then Belfast Building and changed the name to “Hobbies and Models” becoming a specialist hobby shop.
Though catering for the general hobbyists per se, Alf first love for the Model Train fraternity .This love was reflected in the stock on the shelf. In the early 70’s Alf retired and the business passed hands to Colin Marik. More hobby lines were introduced but the Model Railways remained the main core of the business.
In 1988 Colin emigrated and the business was bought by the current owner Richard Stuart.
For the past twenty years he has been more than ably assisted by his wife Thelma and daughter Ingrid, both of whom have become specialist in the model railway field.
In 1998the shop relocated from central Johannesburg to Darras Centre in Kensington .A down size in premises dictated a change in stock holding and it was decided to revert to a specialist Model Railway shop catering for the needs of the model railway enthusiast of all ages. We endeavour to carry an extensive range of accessories which will enable the model train enthusiast to build the layout of his dreams.
